LG Optimus 2X and LG Optimus Black in the news

Just like a few days ago you couldn’t really get away from announcement over announcement made by Sony Ericsson, as well as a series of nice new things happening over there, it seems it’s LG’s time to wave it’s fist and point. This time around I’m pretty sure you still remember the LG Optimus 2X which we previewed several times but never gotten around to test it since it was only launched on the South Korean market. It seems this time around we are finally getting lucky as the device should start shipping in Europe as well within the following few weeks.

For those of you living in the UK, you can pre-order the device already and Denmark is the next country to see the LG Optimus 2X on their shelves. As such, online retailer Ellos will give the ability to pre-order the device from their page. The expected date for shipping to commence is February 25th. Note that the pricing displayed is only for a contract-free LG Optimus 2X so it might be steep to some, but in this world for incredibly fast Android smartphones think that this is the only one out with a dual-core processor. The shipping price for the LG Optimus 2X will be 3,599 Danish kroner which according to Google would be roughly 480 Euros and for the American market, 650 US Dollars.

Considering the top of the line specs this devices comes with, I think it’s safe to assume that it will be selling well. Those of us who weren’t privileged by an early launch, yes South Korea I’m looking at you, had to be glad to see the first few images and clips out on the great wide web, where the device worked magic. Full HD support, dual-core Tegra 2 CPU, 4 inch WVGA display, 8 MP rear camera, 1.3 MP front camera and 8 GB built-in on-board storage, with the possibility to up it with a 32 GB micro SD.

Moving away a touch from the world of super smartphones and their shiny capes and masks, it’s time to take a look at the LG Optimus Black. Despite that it’s not as quick as its dual-core sibling it’s bringing back something which I thought had disappeared since the day of the feature-phones. I’m talking about customizability. Of course you are buying an Android smartphone because you can customize every aspect of it but that won’t change the fact that it will still remain a black slab. LG comes to our rescue with the Optimus Black as it will have the option of changing the back plates. This means really that your device could be baby pink, or fire orange (was not thinking about the fruit hereJ) and thus give it a different look than most devices out now. To be honest I enjoy this initiative by LG because the world of Android smartphones and the world of smartphones in general could use some “user generated” creativity.

So in case you are looking out for a top of the notch device which will shred any device out now on the market when it comes to raw power and usability, then make sure to keep an eye out for the LG Optimus 2X and in case you would like to play around with your device and make it baby pink then make sure to give the LG Optimus Black a quick look. Until next time, let me know which one it is cause I will be busy taking out my crayons and painting my Milestone purple.1

LG T-Mobile G-Slate with 3D?

You just got to love LG. Sure I might behave like a fan boy when saying that, but take into account the fact that they have really been pulling their weight lately. When a couple of weeks ago someone was bashing the LG Optimus One in a forum, I quickly jumped in and defended it. Why? Because considering the price range it’s in, it delivers quite the powerful package. LG is the first company to have ever released a dual-core Android smartphone and have been hard at work lately as well.

For one thing they have announced the development of their 3D technology for smartphones and tablets as well. The cool thing about what they managed to pull off is actually the fact that you can get the 3D effect without the need of the 3D glasses. As such they introduced a 4.3 inch display at CES, note that I am saying a display and not a smartphone, which did indeed have 3D capabilities without the use of glasses. The results were really speaking for themselves. The technology developed for the display is called parallax barrier technology, which actually work as a series of slits attached to the front of the LCD panel in order to block light. These slits or barriers make sure that the left and the right eye see different images, thusly creating the effect of depth and thus generating a really convincing 3D effect.

The display showcased at CES was a 4.3 inch WVGA display with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, but considering that the latest generation of smartphones announced at CES comes with a 4.3 inch display, I think we all know where they are going with this. Still on a further inquiry on the subjects, LG announced that it will be showcasing a tablet with 3D support at MWC. The tablet in case is the LG T-Mobile G-Slate and will come with a 8.9 inch 3D display, which will give you the ability to view 3D content without the use of glasses, 3D recording capabilities, the Tegra 2 dual-core CPU and a USB connector and HDMI connector.

There is actually only one beef I would have with the technology as I feel that it’s actually way to ahead of its time. Just take a minute and think about how many other devices or technologies come with 3D support and you know what I want to say with it. Other than the clips you might be able to create with your tablet and some movies which came out last year, you won’t really get the chance to fully use the 3D technology to its full advantage. Will YouTube add another small button on their page next to 360, 480,720p, 1080p and 3D? We will just have to sit and wait quietly but from these first few images and scarce press releases LG gave, I think we will be in for a treat. Until next time, I’ll drop the 3D glasses when writing the articles for it does give me a headache.1
