I might be biased when writing this article so I do apologize in advance for that one. You might have noticed that Sony Ericsson has been a lot in the news lately and it also seems that they are enjoying the spotlight and aren’t willing to let anyone steal their thunder. First off I can’t wait to see what the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc will do once it’s out and what it’s final launch specs will be. If you’ll check out my posts a few days ago you’ll see that there have been a few announcements related to it. To be honest I’ll wait and hope that once MFW comes around (that’s in February by the way) SE will give us more on that subjects.
Either way, returning to the task at hand, it seems that despite a lot of the issues that have been surrounding their Xperia series, for one they aren’t willing to update it, SE has had a very good year. In an announcement they made it seems that they manage to sell over 9 million units last year alone. Considering the financial trouble they have been in back in 2009 when the company had pretty large losses, it’s still good to see that they managed to pull through. As such their sales reached 6,294 million Euros last year, compared to 6,788 million Euros in 2009.
Yet their operating income was -1,018 million Euros in 2009 so the company had some serious financial issues. This number changed in 2010 to 159 million Euros, thanks largely to their high-end line of Android based smartphones, mainly the Xperia series to be more accurate. Considering that income before taxes for this past year was 189 million Euros and 2009 saw a loss of 878 million Euros, I’d say the company is pretty safe this time around. They claimed that their sales were growing steadily though the year and the only reason they didn’t have a bigger spike at the end of the year during the holidays was mainly due to the fact that they didn’t bring out any new devices for the holiday season. From this point of view I do wish them the very best of luck as the Xperia line sure shows that they can do pretty well in this aspect.
For those of you who do own a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, note that this is only valid for the X10 users, so those owning a X10 mini, X10 mini pro or an X8 won’t be able to pull this one off, you can get Android 2.2.1 Froyo for your device. Thanks to XDA Developers, there is a custom ROM built for the X10 which reached the Beta 2 version. Note that you will have to get root for this to work and there is always the small chance of turning your 500 euro device into a very expensive and nice looking paperweight so make sure that you are doing this at your own peril. In case you are willing to take the chance then I’ll leave a link here to the instructions on how to root your device and where to get the ROM for your 2.2.1 update. Make sure to show your support to those who put so much time and effort into this. Until next time, I’ll be watching my friend hopefully not turning his phone into a brick.
