Android OS

I don’t know if you have heard of the App Inventor, but this is what I will present in this article. The applications that are created for this environment are not necessarily created on tablets or smartphones that use this type of operating system. You can create an application that will run on iPhone or on Motorola Droid X on your computer that uses Windows as well.

But to make sure that the applications are working as they should do on an Android-based device, you should have at least one smartphone or at least one tablet, if you are developing for tablets. The App Inventor app, because I don’t know how to call this software program, is a little software that actually helps you to design the applications that you want and how you want them for your phone. The application will begin to be developed in your browser. This is the place where you design how the application will actually look like. then, after the app will be created, you will see how the app behaves. You will see this by executing the code.

If you have a live connection between the browser and the phone, because you will not develop the application in the browser of your phone, but in the browser of the computer that you own, you will see how the application will appear on a smartphone. App Inventor is an application created by Google Labs and if you want to know more, you have to enter the link that is present over here.

This is the playground, as it is called by Google for the Google’s engineers. This is the location where they are allowed to do all sorts of experiments. After all, this is a lab, where almost everything is allowed, as long as you don’t burn the lab and the tools in it. The users like yourself can also test the lab and see the tools inside it, but you must know how to work with them, otherwise your interference there will not provide too much success to the projects there. You can send the suggestions that you have to Google and remember to stay protected while you are creating the application, because you must not forget that you are in a lab.1

10 Android Apps

I am supposed to name 10 Android apps and I will name the first applications that are in the Communication category on the Android Market site. Because I like all the apps that are created for this platform and also the ones created for the Apple platform, I can’t say that yes, the X application is my favorite one, because all of them are important. It is a bit frustrating when you see that there are some applications which do not run as their manufacturer says they do or which force close. But luckily, there comes the update time and the problems get solved one way or another.

But let’s go back to the countdown, which is in fact not a countdown, but a top of the applications which are in the top free preferences of the Android users. They are taken directly from the Android Market site, which I invite you to access by clicking on this link. Ok, let’s get started.

  1. The first application is Kakao Talk, which is developed by Kakao and which has received 5 stars from the users. I will not mention this anymore, because all the apps have 5 stars out of 5. This is something normal, considering that the apps are all free and they are at the top.
  2. WhatsApp Messenger is the second app present on the Android Market site. The name says is all. It is an instant messaging program.
  3. Gmail. No further explanations.
  4. Yahoo! Mail. The same.
  5. TiKL- Touch to Talk, developed by TiKL, installed by more than 100000 people.
  6. Handcent SMS. Created by Handcent_admin.
  7. Daum MyPeople mVoIP, by Daum Communications.
  8. Google Voice
  9. Skype
  10. Anti-virus free by AVG Mobilation.

My advice when you don’t seem to be capable of running an app is to contact directly the manufacturer, instead of taking the face of an upset person who does not want to hear about that manufacturer. Think about it: by telling them that the app does not work properly on Motorola Droid X let’s say, you will announce the manufacturer that there is a problem and they will try to solve it. Especially if they require money for the app that they have created. Don’t be indifferent and let the situation go. You will do yourself a good and also the other people who run a Motorola smartphone and have the same problem when trying to use that app.1

Android iPhone Killer

Ever since Android managed to get some more scene action people have been wondering when Android iPhone Killer would emerge. There are major differences between the current existing Android smartphones, so finding one which could tackle the Apple iPhone not only on the specs part of the deal but the software part as well is quite difficult. This time around I will try to focus on two Android devices which might just be powerful enough to take on the mighty iPhone from Apple and maybe even give some of you newer users a good look at what you’ll be getting for your money.

The first contestant on the Android iPhone killer sector is LG Optimus 2X which has just recently been launched in the US as well under the name of G2X with T-Mobile. The device goes for $199 on a 2 year subscription and might just have what it takes to fight iPhone. The LG Optimus 2X comes with NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 dual core processor, it has 512 MB of RAM along with 8 GB of storage. Running on top of it is Android 2.2 Froyo with rumors going around regarding an update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Of course, there’s always the ability to root this little monster but that’s a different story.

LG Optimus 2X has more than enough power to become an Android iPhone killer, yet I would note that Android 2.2 Froyo is somewhat outdated for this battle and the display has a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels giving a lower pixel density than what we find on iPhone. Other than that, if you are interested in raw power, LG Optimus 2X outclasses the iPhone in every aspect.

The other contestant seems even more appropriate to be named the Android iPhone killer as it comes with the same NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, but with 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of on board storage. We are talking about Motorola Atrix which is available at AT&T. The device has a 4 inch qHD display with a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels and enough power to tackle Apple’s iPhone. The battery life is high thanks to the 1930 mAh power and with great new features. I think we might be looking at Android iPhone Killer. Check out their respective pages and get yours !1

Quad-Core powered Android Smartphones from Motorola

There are a few months since we saw the first dual-core smartphone really enter the market and NVIDIA already showed off its Tegra 3 chip which will be launching this year with a tablet first and a smartphone to follow it up towards the end of the year. The new Tegra 3 chip is a quad-core platform that delivers almost an equal power to that of a desktop processor ( mind you I’m not exactly saying that we are entering Sandy Bridge territory, but it’s something to keep in mind ). While browsing through the pages, my attention got drawn by some rumors circulating from Motorola.

The US market barely got hold of some dual-core goodness in these past few months ( weeks really ), with T-Mobile G2X finally hitting the North American market and already rumors are circulating regarding the Tegra 3 chip. To be quite precise it seems that Motorola is working on two new devices which are rumored for launch sometime in Q1 of 2012. One of them is named Motorola Bullet, which will be your run of the mill quad-core powered Android slate. Motorola’s Jet is rumored to be a smartphone with a QWERTY slide out keyboard, most likely continuing the Motorola Droid tradition.

Other than the quad-core processor in these beasts, there have been some specs circulating, but note that all of this is still heavily filed in the rumor department so don’t go overboard in celebrating just yet. As such, Motorola Bullet is rumored to launch with a 4.3 inch qHD display ( that’s 540 x 960 pixels ) and will come with the Tegra 3 chip accompanied by 1 or 2 GB of RAM ( as I said, these are still very early leaks on these 2 devices ). Motorola Jet is rumored to ship with a 4 inch display with the same resolution as the bigger Bullet, with the same Tegra 3 chip and the same amount of RAM on board.

The storage is rumored to be around the 16 GB mark with rear-facing cameras going up to the 12 megapixels mark. No word exactly on when these devices will be hitting the market other than the roughly sketched Q1 of 2012. No pictures or images are available either, so again, stay tuned for more !1

Android gets drafted for the US Army

That’s right folks, our favorite platform will be helping the US Army out in the near future. The platform was chosen by the US Army in order to power their smartphone which will be hitting the troops in a while. This was made as an effort to help the soldiers on the battlefield to stay connected at all times and to be honest, Android seems like a pretty solid choice for the task. The Google’s Android platform has already seen itself modified into a version for the Army which has been developing a prototype named at the time the “Joint Battle Command-Platform”.

Obviously there are some issues which I’m concerned with and the most important one is the fact that – is Android secure enough to serve in a military environment? I know that the operating system recently won an award as being the most secure operating system out on the market, yet that was received after the platform received some severe blows from some malware which sneaked its way to the Android Market. Obviously there are tons of modifications which will be taken in order to fix any such exploits, yet my question remains – is a commercial software out on the market really going to cut the high standards required for the military service?

The other issue which I would like to raise is obviously connected to the smartphone you will be handing out to your troops. I would have some issues when thinking at a HTC Desire S in the hands of a soldier accustomed to the military grade equipment and I think that the durability is probably one of the largest issues at hand. Sure there are some pretty rugged smartphones out on the market, but my question remains – will those suffice in a combat scenario? Is your average Motorola Defy or Casio G’zOne Commando going to be enough for the requirements of a battlefield?

I guess it’s really too soon to tell as this has just been recently announced, yet my concerns are valid I feel. The best thing in this direction is to wait it out and maybe we’ll take a few looks at something custom made for the Army. Stay tuned for more!1
